Belgrade, capital city of the Eastern European country of Serbia, will deploy 100 electric buses in preparation for EXPO 2027. The new vehicles will be used to connect the exhibition site in Surčin with multiple key locations across the city, according to local media. The fleet will include 15 double-articulated buses, each 25 metres long. All buses are set to be sourced from Chinese Higer. The same Chinese group presented the FENCER F1 Integral EV at UITP Summit, aiming at a larger position in the European market.
According to current plans, nine of the articulated units will operate between the National Stadium railway station and the EXPO site, covering a 1.4-kilometre route. The remaining six will serve the connection between Block 45 and the event grounds.
Higer electric buses for Belgrade
Half of the 100 vehicles will be battery-electric, while the other half will use supercapacitor-based energy storage. It’s a technology already adopted in the city, backed by Israeli company Chariot Motors. Charging infrastructure will be installed at several terminuses across the city, including Ustanička, Belgrade Waterfront, Block 20 and Block 45 in New Belgrade, Vuk’s Monument, and Nikola Tesla Airport.
Serbian Monitor states that “All 100 electric buses, as we were told, will be of the Higer brand, as they will be purchased as part of a direct negotiation procedure. The purchase price of these vehicles is not yet known, but according to unofficial information, this purchase could cost approximately EUR 150 million”.
Following the conclusion of the EXPO, scheduled from May to August 2027, the buses will be transferred to GSP Belgrade for regular public transport service.
