Sustainable Bus of the Year 2016: the finalists “Sustainable Bus of the Year” 2016 finalists are now known. Ten buses will compete for the three awards, one for each category (urban, intercity, coach). Prizes will be assigned on 26th October at Rimini International Bus Expo. SBY, created and promoted by Autobus magazine, is the first and only European award that acknowledges sustainability in the field of buses. In the urban class, the finalists are Mercedes Citaro Ngt, Solaris Urbino electric and Volvo electricity 10.7.
About Intercity category, the challenge will be between Scania Interlink gas, Man Intercity and Setra S 415 Business. Finally, four coaches have been nominated: Volvo 9900 Vds, Vdl Futura double-decker, Irizar i8, Iveco Evadys. Now the finalists’ features are going to be examinated from an international board of experts coming from different European countries. SBY evaluates the environmental impact and the sustainable features of the vehicle. An additional aspect taken into account is safety, i.e. the capability of the vehicle to reduce the danger for passengers, pedestrians and the driver. Sustainability also means establishing a positive image of the vehicle to the eyes of the general public. Hence, several aspects can come into play, such as noise, recyclability of components and the general environmental commitment of the manufacturer. SBY is an award that aims at pushing the boundaries of what has been done so far in the bus and coach industry, in terms of consumptions, emissions and cost-benefit ratio. The prize goes beyond the restricted and specialized group of engineers active in the field, it reaches out to the general public with the aim of becoming understandable to everyone
