Berlin Transport Authority (BVG) places major order with VDL Bus & Coach
Two years ago, the Berlin Transport Authority (Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe, BVG), subjected two VDL Citeas LLE-120 to intensive field tests in the urban traffic of Berlin. The lightweight buses proved their mettle, passing with flying colours. BVG officially awarded the tender contract for 236 low entry buses to VDL Bus & Coach on 9 May 2014. The delivery of the 236 Citeas LLE will take place during the period from 2014 to 2017, based on a framework contract established between BVG and VDL Bus & Coach that includes an option to extend by two years. “This is the largest order ever for VDL Bus & Coach Deutschland. It makes clear that a Light Low Entry model is also superbly suited to withstand the harsh traffic conditions in urban Berlin,” said an enthusiastic Boris Höltermann, Public Transport Manager at VDL Bus & Coach Deutschland. “We are very proud of the fact that BVG has chosen our buses. This order validates our decision to pursue a strategy based on lightweight concepts and Profit of Ownership with a focus on public transport in Europe,” said Rémi Henkemans, Managing Director VDL Bus & Coach bv.

Innovative lightweight concept

For the VDL buses with a lightweight construction the focus is on achieving better fuel economy and the resulting emissions reductions. Naturally the buses also continue to meet the highest safety standards. The Citea LLE has a net weight of approximately 9 tonnes, and according to BVG’s own tests consumes 20% less diesel fuel than comparable products, which equates to a reduction of around 18 tonnes of harmful substance emissions per year, per vehicle. The combination VDL Citea LLE Euro 6 and a consumption reduction of 20% also cuts NOx emissions by 95%. With this level of performance, the Citea meets requirements normally placed on vehicles with hybrid technology, without the additional expense related to that technology or the associated costs for workshops and infrastructure.

The Berlin Transport Authority (BVG)

BVG operates the public transport network in Berlin and surrounding region. Every day more than 1,300 buses are in service, collectively bringing approximately 937 million passengers to their destination annually. This makes the Berlin Transport Authority the largest operator of buses in the German-speaking region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland). Each year BVG’s buses and trains travel more than 125 million kilometres, the equivalent of circling the globe nearly 8.5 times a day.
